This current site, patpeters.org, is running off of a custom theme I built using bootstrap and the blankslate theme pack.
This theme utilizes multiple category loops to pull in portfolio projects, blog posts, and other categories in separate pages. My theme also uses multiple page and post templates, to show single blog posts in a different format than single portfolio entries and applications.
I started this theme with an index page I built using plain bootstrap. After figuring out a home page design that I liked, I set up my home page and blog page within the blankslate theme framework. I then added theme support for html5 video (playing from youtube videos to cut down on load time), and a portfolio section that pulls posts labeled with the “portfolio” category. After configuring a similar setup for my blog posts, I had a fully functioning site with multiple categories of posts, responsive design, and support for video-backgrounds.
